London, 23rd September
This quartet from Peckham, London, call their music ‘psychedelic drum pop’, but reject the suggestion that it is ‘tribal’.
They’re Josh Mitchell (vocals, guitar, samplers), Charlie Rotberg (drums, samplers), James Moruzzi (samplers, drums, vocals) and Thomas Gunning (drums, samplers, vocals). It’s likely they’ll appeal to fans of Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Panda Bear and These New Puritans.
With three of them playing drums, vital to the rhythm, things get a little bit crazy when combined with dreamy vocals, melodies and experimental noise samples. As a video-art and music collective from Goldsmith College, their sounds are sometimes compared with the mosaics one finds in a kaleidoscope.
Cola, with almost a tropical feel, has energetic, fast-paced percussion which culminates in chaos and fanatical animal like screams. This joyous and hypnotic music would be equally in place at a club venue, a wild private party or a riotous public carnival. It’s vibrant and a little mysterious in a musical world where it’s increasingly difficult to find something a bit different.
Set list: Banana Bread, Slush Puppy, Cola, Untitled New Jam & Happiness.
