Marble Valley are an international collective of talented individuals moulded together by Steve West, Pavement’s drummer since ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain’, and with David Berman on the 2005 Silver Jews album, ‘Tanglewood Numbers’. Their new full length, ‘Breakthrough’, is the bands 4th since 1997 and was painstakingly conceived on 5 continents, in 17 different countries whilst touring the planet during Pavement’s epic reunion tour in 2010. Mostly recorded by Remco in his Amsterdam studio, the thirteen tracks on offer here resemble the bands most complete and cohesive album to date.
‘Breakthrough’ was recorded in an unconventional way with the band spending a weekend in Amsterdam recording ideas and then West taking them away and reconstructing them as songs. Once loosely assembled they have been pulled, stretched and slapped about whilst on the road with Pavement during their reunion tour of 2010. At times this Heath Robinson way of working has been a real struggle, but the end result has proved to be satisfying and the bands best work to date. The band hope you enjoy it as much as they did making it. Hopefully you can raise a glass and sing along with them.
The band return to the UK for the third time this year, followed by a week of shows across Europe. As anyone who saw the band raise the roof at last year’s Pavement curated ATP Festival, it’s live where The Valley really come to life. A cacophony of driving keys and party inducing pop songs ensure the audience is as involved in the show as the musical cast.
