Born in the small logging town of Coquille, Oregon, Gibson started as an outsider to Portland’s vibrant indie rock scene performing solo acoustic shows in AIDS hospices and kindergartens. Her previous record ‘Beasts of Seasons‘, released on City Slang imprint Souterrain Transmissions in 2009, was indeed a “beast” of a record, split into two parts: communion songs and funeral songs.

Since the release of this endeavour, Gibson was able to claim a very special place in the world of modern folk music, among critics, but more importantly, among the hearts of sincere music lovers.

If ‘Beasts of Seasons’ was a record about quietness and frailty, ‘La Grande‘ is a record about strength, and finds Gibson not just crawling, but leaping out of her shell.  The album came to form with much encouragement and musical help from Joey Burns of Calexico, The Dodos, and several Portland luminaries.

However, some of the most magical moments are when Laura plays all the instruments – which include acoustic and electric guitars, bass, percussion, piano, pump organ, vibraphone, marimba and a marching drum.
