THREE FIELDS

Inspired by travel, open spaces and technology, Birmingham composer and producer Three Fields presents Wild Blue Yonder. Ambient, melodic, low-fi magnetic textures and ivory keys dominate this collection of gorgeous sonic compositions.

Beginning in the 1980’s, with basic Yamaha keyboards, the first Three Fields compositions were created. With only cassette players to record on though, these early tracks were never developed beyond their original form. Even so, these were the seeds, from which musical passion and inspiration would grow.

As the 21st century arrived, so did new technology. The old keyboards were out, replaced by the Swedish software program, Reason. Now the virtual studio had arrived. With its rack of hardware synthesizers, samplers, signal processors, sequencers and mixers, all of which could be freely interconnected, endless creative possibilities and potential presented themselves. Now, it was possible to record, produce and manufacture the early ideas on one machine, without having to leave the room.

Through various chillout compilations, Three Fields was introduced to a number of musicians and artists; Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Jarre, Orbital and Boards of Canada included. Realising the market and fan base of electronica, others out there producing and listening to the genre, so grew his enthusiasm to create his first EP. Real Miles was a true amateur release; produced, just to prove it was possible to do so. Building on the efforts of his debut, This Other Drum followed, though this release would closely mimic a similar sound to that of his debut, something he wanted to move away from and develop further through the intervention of modern technology.

With this in mind, Cubase soon became the software of choice in the studio, boosted by Native Instruments sounds. With this new technology, new tracks began to appear. Taking its title from a poster in the college where he worked, Irregular Verbs would become the third Three Fields EP. With a richer, more developed sound, it was clear this was where the future lay. Building on this progress, the next collection has now appeared.

Inspired by the open sky, and those who fly in it, Wild Blue Yonder is the latest offering from this dynamic musician. Beginning with a lingering yet hypnotizing drone, A Distant Star is a collection of perfectly meshed sounds that build slowly as gloriously subtle piano keys step in and out of synch. A chilling yet compelling tension continues to build in How it Rains Here, giving way to the sequenced lines of Like Vortices and the Wendy Carlos-esque On.

Finally, turn down the lights, and float off to magical new horizons as Transition captures the serenity of drifting into orbit, and looking down on the Earth below. This six-track EP is a stunning anthology of instrumental sounds; pianos, electronics and soothing ambient tones – so put your headphones on, and wander off into the Wild Blue Yonder.
