“Fatou” is the debut album by Fatoumata Diawara a singer-songwriter born in the Ivory coast, of Malian origin and currently based in Paris. Fatoumata blends Wassalou traditions of Southern Mali with international influences to create a soulful album with an eclectic range of musical influences.
Although her music would be described as a fusion of sounds Fatoumata’s music is still distinctly African. Her soulful and smooth vocals lead the album that has minimal backing- with subtle touches of acoustic guitar, touches of west African harp and lute, occasional jazz piano and minimal percussion. This sparse backing music allows Fatoumata’s soulful vocals to shine through.
As a singer-songwriter she sings about issues that are close to her heart such as arranged marriage and female circumcision, though she is just as passionate on simple songs such as Opening track “Kanou” a beautiful and melancholy love song. This is an impressive debut from a silky new voice who stays true to her roots.
