LIVE ELECTRIC LAUNCH EXCLUSIVE – TUESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER

&

THE GRAND OPENING – SATURDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER

ELECTRIC BRIXTON, TOWN HALL PARADE, LONDON, SW2 1RJ

& EVENTS DIARY OCTOBER

www.electricbrixton.com

Electric Brixton officially opens its doors to the public on Tuesday 20th September for Hard Fi and  Saturday 24th September with The Grand Opening Night hosted by Lock N Load, bringing back to life the iconic venue previously known as The Fridge and before that, The Ace. These launches are  followed by a stellar diary of events throughout October ranging from live bands to an exciting array of club nights (listings below). A £1,000,000  refurbishment is now almost complete, bringing back where possible original interior features with some twists for the 21st century.

Electric Brixton boasts an amazing stage with unsurpassed sightlines making it the perfect venue for large scale club events, live music, television recording, private parties and special arts events. Across both floors the venue will have a capacity of 1,700 for club events and 1,500 for live shows. It will be the only mid-range music venue in Brixton and opens in an area with a long-established vibrant music scene, standing alongside Brixton Academy, Plan B, The Dogstar, The Windmill and many other live music pubs and clubs. Keeping Brixton at its heart Electric Brixton will be equally at home hosting avant-garde arts events as it is hosting straight up clubs, a new centrally located independent venue perfect for South London.

The Electric Brixton was originally known as the Palladium Picture Playhouse, built to entertain the new middle class commuters who resided in Brixton with the coming of the railway, adjacent to Lambeth Town Hall. It was designed in the Edwardian neo-classical and Baroque style by Gilbert Booth and opened on 20th March 1913. In 1929 it was renamed the Palladium Cinema but with the post-war desire for the ‘moderne’ standard style, its façade was swept away in 1956 when it became the Regal Cinema, then in 1977 the Ace Cinema. The cinema closed in 1981 but as the Ace Club venue many important post-punk bands (and more strangely Level 42) played there including The Fall, The Smiths, New Order, The March Violets and rather bizarrely The Cocteau Twins who supported Killing Joke at one show. It also intermittently hosted a roller-disco before becoming the new venue for The Fridge which had moved from its original site in 1985. The roll call of bands is pretty impressive – Pet Shop Boys, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grace Jones, Sade have all performed there. In fact Gil Scott-Heron played one of his last live shows in the venue. The club was at the forefront of the rave explosion in the early ‘90’s and played host to a wide array of club nights such as Return To the Source and Love Muscle.
