Puro Instinct – “Headbangers in Ecstasy”
Sisters Piper, 23 and Skylar Kaplan, 16 started out as a duo formerly known as Pearl Harbour and released their debut EP “Something About the Chapparrals” which was met with relative success and a sense of anticipation for a full length LP. 2 years later the sisters are back and although they are now surrounded by 4 other band members and go by the name Puro Instinct, this outfit continues to centre around these enchanting sisters. Hailing from L.A there is a definite touch of a laid back, retro California sound to be heard on “Headbangers in Ecstasy” but Puro Instinct have added to this sound, this record has a modern, hazy and almost hypnotic feel.
The songs on this record are minimalist, escapist and dreamy- a style of music that has become its own genre of late and with bands like the XX and Beach House experiencing mainstream success with an experimental, under produced sound. However, where the XX flourished in this genre, at times Puro Instinct fall short of the mark. Many of the songs feel too vacant and to me, are begging for some more harmonies, richer instrumentation or simply a more decisive melody.
There are some great tracks to be heard on this LP all the same. Standout tracks are opening track “Everybody’s Sick” a playful 80s sounding track with tinkering electronics and smooth reverb. “Slivers of You” is a song where Puro Instinct really go for it. You can hear rock influences in this song, a real crowd pleaser. Lead single “Stilyagi” a dream-pop tune with a bright chorus and breathy vocals that work really well with the tone of the song.
Even when Puro Instinct veer off track slightly, “Headbangers in Ecstasy” is a consistent album and showcases a sound that is distinctly their own.
