Dawes – Nothing is Wrong
Having released their debut album “North Hills” in 2009, American rock band Dawes have been touring almost non-stop ever since due to its success. Somehow, they managed to find the time to write some more material and record new album “Nothing is Wrong” which will be released on September 5th through Loose Music records.
Dawes have a classic Americana rock sound- the songs on this record have been carefully crafted, using all of the crucial elements- crashing drums, competing guitar riffs and suitable angsty lyrics and vocals to create the perfect rock anthem.
However don’t be fooled, at times “Nothing is Wrong” hits an emotional tender note such as in “Fire Away” a moving song whereby lead singer Taylor Goldmith offers to take the blame for a spit and to carry the burden of the emotional damage it has caused- even though it is hinted that he os not in the wrong. Many of the songs on this album are along the same thread- at the core they are love songs with mild folk influences but remain rock songs all the same. “Million Dollar Bill” is a truly stunning song the lyrics describe someone who cannot bear to be forgotten by a former lover and longs to be a permanent presence in her life. Goldsmith croons that he could do this by having his face put on banknotes or by becoming a famous cultural icon never to be forgotten by his ex. This is a sentiment that has been written about by many but Dawes wrote about it from a unique perspective in this tune. “Time Spent in Los Angeles” opens this album as Dawes tries to defend a place that has gotten a bad name over the years for being too superficial and commercial. However they try to remind us that some of the best rock and roll of all time came from Los Angeles.
It seems that in the two years they have been touring Dawes have perfected the formula that brought them success with their first album. “Nothing is Wrong” is a perfect mixture of gritty guitar, emotional themes, the surprise element with beautiful organ harmonies popping up all over the album and of course the classic rock sound that seems to come so naturally to this band.
