Terminal Gods – Genesis

| On 05, Sep 2011

Genesis is the debut EP from four piece goth-punk Terminal Gods. Despite the absence of a drummer instead opting for the use of a drum machine there is quite a lot of power behind the music. The mix between the two guitarists, one punk and one goth gives the music plenty of drive and atmosphere. What draws you in to the EP is it has catchy tunes but it is really let down by it’s familiarity. All bands look to their past to find influence for themselves before reinterpreting it. What holds this EP back is for all it’s catchy punk song sensibilities you just feel like you’ve heard it all before. If you’ve ever heard any early 80’s goth rock you’ve pretty much heard this EP. The guitars and general ambience is Sisters of Mercy, the drum machine is Big Black and the vocals are the baritone of too many goth vocalists to list here. Ultimately at the end what you are left with is slightly unfulfilling. It’s perfectly pleasant to listen to it, preferably of some dreary rainy day looking mournfully out of grey block of flats, but it’s nothing original. Every element of the music has been lifted from somewhere else and put together in the form of Terminal Gods.
