OLD SLEDGE – DON’T LET YOUR DEAL GO DOWN

UK Tour – September-October 2011

Blowing the dust off old tunes and songs from the golden era of early country and blues music

Old Sledge is a hard driving, real-deal hillbilly string band from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, reviving old time country and blues from the turn of the 20th century with a young punk attitude and creativity more reminiscent of indie rock.
Far from being urban imitators of string band music, their roots run deep into the heart of the tradition, Old Sledge represents the best of the youth revival of southern mountain music.  Their performances move from breakneck fiddle hoedowns into lonesome murder ballads, grimy string band blues and early swing.  Featuring unique arrangements that breathe new life into old obscure tunes, you are struck by the immediacy these young players bring to their performances.
Old Sledge is led by front man Chance McCoy, multiple time Fiddle Champion of West Virginia and one time star of the BBC television show ‘Folk America‘.  Being a native of Appalachia, Chance learned his music directly from the old masters and is now considered one of the finest traditional players in America, not only on the fiddle, but as a singer as well.  Providing the driving rhythm guitar, singing lead and harmony vocals is the musical gypsy of the south, Sabra Guzmán.  Together Chance and Sabra create a powerful vocal harmony patterned on the classic brother duets from the 1920’s south.  They are joined by virtuoso Luke Richardson from Tennessee on clawhammer banjo, protégé of Adam Hurt.

“Old Sledge did not disappoint…. Lead singer Chance McCoy sawed his fiddle till the strings snapped (literally).” Charleston Gazette

“… a formidable folk-music force.” Northern Express, Michigan

“… a rapidly rising star in the world of American traditional music.” The Barbican

” [they] sound deeply traditional in the best and most effortless sense: they’ve listened a lot to the people who came before them, and they pay respect with every note, but the music is their own.” Old Time Herald, North Carolina
