Although walking a line of his own, the comparisons to sublime talents such as Nick Cave, Jacques Brel and Ol’ Blue Eyes himself indicate the thrall in which Lukeman – also known as Jack L – holds his audiences. Now, fresh from Edinburgh festival success, Ireland’s darkly eloquent troubadour invites you to his one-night-only London home at urbane Shoreditch haunt McQueen on September 15.
Part-cabaret star, part-carnival barker, all-vocal prowess, Lukeman has won a multitude of fans in Ireland and Scotland and now brings his remarkable voice to the UK capital. Lukeman tempts you into his den of dark delights with CHEZ JACK L, an hour of nighttime tunes from Jacques Brel, Randy Newman and the man himself, Jack Lukeman.
Jack L is also to hit the UK airwaves this autumn with new single MON COEUR, a collaboration with Irish-French enchantress Camille O’Sullivan. It’s a particularly apt union: as Camille reimagines classic songs by music luminaries such as Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Jacques Brel, Lukeman is rightly renowned for his pared down, beautiful takes on pop tracks, such as Katy Perry’s Firework and Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy. Add to this his own tracks and unique takes on Messrs Brel and Newman, and it’s no wonder Jack L has audiences and press alike under his spell.
Lukeman’s fluid voice has been mesmerising audiences since 1995, when he and his then backing band, The Black Romantics, took up residence at Dublin’s The Da Club. Since going solo in 1999, Lukeman has released nine albums and a best of… collection to great acclaim. Blending theatricality, magic and phenomenal vocal power, Lukeman offers an aural experience that’s dazzling, dizzying – and unlike anything else out there.
