Snippet – Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey

| On 29, Aug 2011

I have spend the best part of this week listening to Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey by Snippet and it certainly an album which you need to listen to a few times before you can discover it’s charm but once you do there’s no turning back.

This is the debut album from Snippet aka Johnno Casson former singer of trip-hop band Deep Joy and has previously worked with the likes of Andrew Wetherall and James Lavelle. That being said you wouldn’t recognise his trip-hop roots from the sound of this record which is a mix of lo-fi folk mixed with some electronica.

On first listen it is hard to tell what it is you’re listening to. It’s hard to tell if it is a joke or not. And this is what initially draws you in, as right from the start it launches a charm offensive and the dry wit of the lyrics will soon seep out and you’ll find yourself having the album on repeat.

Listening to the album is like listening to a mate at an open mic night singing songs that comprise of your private jokes. It has a very intimate atmosphere that you can’t help but get swept up in.

Whilst it may not be sophisticated music the buckets of charm outweigh all of it and the lyrics always remain fun. It took a few listens to uncover this gem but once you do it’ll pay divends.
