Circus – 9th Birthday Party
Saturday 24th September @ The Masque, Liverpool
Relentless.
If you only had one word, or three syllables, to describe the evolution of Circus over its nine year tenure, this would be the most suitable choice. It’s hard to think of a club night in the UK which has raised the bar each time, sourcing the world for the next epoch-breaking sounds in electronica, and bringing them to Liverpool. It’s a difficult job enough to maintain such consistency, something which Circus does with aplomb; a loyal and loving crowd, brilliant guests and a great team of residents make for one of the leading parties around.
At the centre of it all has been Yousef, who much like the night in question has hit stratospheric levels since it happened. The start of his tenure he was a DJ who had decided to call time on his Cream residency (before the club itself closed its doors), now he is an international trendsetter with his second artist album on the way and the world’s finest clubs booking him (his Ibizan exclusions alone say it all, a residency alongside Carl Cox’s Revolution at Space and frequent Circo Loco appearances).
He obviously takes centre stage at the club night he lovingly curates, alongside a very special guest that is set to be announced in the forthcoming days. Headlining Circus has been the job of the great and the good of modern dance music, the aforementioned Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Sasha, Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier and countless others all assuming the mantle, so it’s without a hint of hyperbole that we let you know the jock in question is equally as well heralded. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the support…
James Zabiela has had quite the summer. August saw him clock up a decade of playing for iconic Ibizan institution We Love… Space, the club offering him free reign of the famed Discoteca for the night with his choice of bookings. He’s adopted the iPad as a new form of musical expression within his DJ sets; taking the tactile capabilities of the machine further and incorporating an even more expressive side to his DJing. With a new record label and a slew of productions in the pipeline, JZ keeps ‘em coming with voracious intensity and makes a more than welcome return to Circus.
One man finally makes his debut at the club; techno leviathan Chris Liebing. As Circus nears a decade in the business there are few DJs who have yet to grace the club’s hallowed decks, but Liebing is one of the names still on the now very small list. His brand of relentless and pounding techno is as uncompromising as Circus’ own dedication to quality, and he is sure to inflict a gut wrenching assault upon the Circus goers ears.
Sonorous underground grooves also come in the shape of Davide Squillace and Maya Jane Coles. Squillace is no stranger to the Circus dancefloor, the DC10 mainstay having played for the club at both Nation and the imperious Masque bringing his swagger and swing to the dancefloor on each occasion. And as for Coles; well the latest starlet of UK house music makes her Masque debut after a scintillating showcase in the Shipping Forecast earlier in the summer. Check her unreleased remix of scenesters Little Dragon’s gorgeous single ‘Ritual Union’ for a synopsis of her effortlessly crafted house sound.
Circus’ two whippersnappers residents Lewis Boardman and Scott Lewis co-star, Boardman’s production evolution continuing with rapid pace (NRK and Tiefschwarz’s Souvenir both feeling the benefit of his touch) and Lewis’ rapid rise amongst the north west’s selector’s elite. It’s going to be one hell of a party. Nine years – count ‘em – come together on Saturday 24th September…
