“Civil Civic cross borders and frequencies to make disco driven music that’s indebted to Sonic Youth, Death From Above 1979, Butthole Surfers and Aphex Twin” – Dazed Digital
“Like having 50,000 Volt live jump cables attached to your nipples whilst sat in a torrential downpour” – Don’t Panic
“Overlook CIVIL CIVIC and you’ve only got yourself to blame” – Dummy
“Civil Civic command your attention, loudly” – Loud and Quiet
“Freaky-Boned Genius” – Artrocker ‘Single Of The Month’ 5/5
It seems the latter option was taken-up by most. On hearing their first two self-released singles ‘Less Unless’ and ‘Run Overdrive’ Civil Civic speedily progressed from the blogasphere’s favourite underground find to Hype Machines’ no. 1 to the band to watch as featured on Dazed Digital, Dummy, Guardian (Band of the Day) and The Fly (One to Watch). Now NME.com are exclusively giving away the “ear-shattering electro scuzz genius” album track ‘Street Trap’ as a Free Download.
Civil Civic are music’s naughty, charismatic rebels flicking the ‘V’ to convention. There are no vocals. Not that you’d notice. Musically Civil Civic is an engulfing, driven sonic slap in the face. The thought no one is singing occurs long after the goose bumps settle and you’ve called all your mates to scream “YOU MUST HEAR THIS!”. Then there’s the line-up. Who needs a four or five piece to blast an audience’s eardrums and create such a euphoric party atmosphere live that the whole of Europe are clambering to book them? Not Civil Civic. Just take two Australians, two guitars and a trusted beat box that doubles up as a light show. And then there is the recording. There is no recording. For Civil Civic have a long distance thing – two Australian’s, one residing in Spain, the other London. Firing mp3s at each other, correcting them, firing them back, re-correcting, pinging it back until a slab of perfection is created amidst the friction of both of them thinking their version is better. Team work. Civil Civic style.
Now Civil Civic have taken their beat box on a mass tour of Europe with UK dates to follow in November.
Their debut album ‘Rules’ is released on 7th November on Gross Domestic Product.
