Earlier this month, vocalist / composer, Emily Saunders performed a dazzling show to a packed-to-the rafters crowd at London’s Vortex. Her just-released debut, Cotton Skies, had picked up some favourable reviews, and a sumptuous live performance on ‘Loose Ends’ had intrigued a crowd keen to experience her passionate set that combines exuberant, hip swaying grooves with romantic melodic songs, light, breathy vocals, wrapped around Brazilian rhythms.
Reflecting her passion for Brazilian rhythms and some of the great composers that have inspired her, Saunders uses her voice as a true improvisation list. Yet it is not only her masterful voice, but her talent as a songwriter that sets her above the rest. Saunders balances the coolness of her poetic compositions and dreamy lyrics with an outstanding selection of fiery arrangements by some of Brazil’s finest composers – her take on Moreira’s ‘Xibaba’ is a real treat, perfect for summer.
