Modestep – Sunlight

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 10 years you can’t have missed the rise of dubstep to become one of the most ubiquitous genres of music around. Everything from dubstep remixes to popular to parodies of various TV shows and commercials have received the wobbly bass line treatment.
When a genre becomes as popular as this it begins to homogenised and Sunlight by Modestep is a prime example of that.
While it is fairly painless to listen to but it is almost exactly like every other dubstep song out there. About half way through listening to it I couldn’t remember who I was listening to my first guess was Chase and Status.
I bares all the standard hallmarks of a dubstep track (or at least the new wave of dubstep ) a vocal sample that it cut and pasted throughout, distorted bass line and big beats. All combined to make this track ‘another dubstep song’.
For those old enough to remember the birth of the genre you will remember a great, exciting and innovative new form of music it is. And while there is still great innovation within the dubstep world this is isn’t it. Everything about it is frankly standard and predictable. I propose we limit the damage by confining it to Oceana nightclubs.
