Hugely influential pianist, bandleader and composer, Michael Garrick, is one of British jazz?s key figures. He mixed music and literature in the early ’60s, played with Don Rendell and Ian Carr, Joe Harriott and Neil Ardley and his top-notch big band features the cream of British jazz musicians. Support from world-class virtuoso guitar-great Etheridge performing in duet with brilliant violinist (and son of Michael) Christian Garrick.

BEATS AND PIECES + KAIROS 4TET
Great double bill with the Manchester based The Beats & Pieces Big Band, a 14 piece contemporary jazz ensemble led by Ben Cottrell and drawing on Loose Tubes, Radiohead, Matthew Herbert and more, in an adventurous, award-winning re-definition of the big band?s possibilities. Playing opposite tonight are Kairos 4Tet – a free-flowing contemporary music quartet led by saxophonist Adam Waldman and featuring the sublime pianist Ivo Neame, bassist du jour Jasper Høiby and drummer Jon Scott plus special guest, London-based, Swedish singer Emilia Martensson? together they play melodic, rhythmically compelling modern jazz.

Sophisticated, top-drawer vocal duo featuring peerless jazz singer Martin, and hugely gifted composer, pianist and knight of the realm, Bennett. United by their love of great songs and with just their two voices and a piano, this promises to be an intimate, charming and hugely enjoyable exploration of the Great American Songbook and beyond, as heard to great effect on their superb recent album Witchcraft. BRIT JAZZ FEST 2011:
LUCINDA BELLE ORCHESTRA + EARL OKIN
Harpist and singer-songwriter Lucinda Belle appears here with her top class orchestra performing material from her hotly-tipped Universal Records debut album My Voice and my 45 Strings. Drawing on rootsy, folk, soul, world, classical and jazz influences (Mama’s and the Papa’s, Eric Satie, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Django Reinhardt), she turns classical on it’s head. Support from cult British comedian, singer and song-writer who wrote songs for Cilla Black and Georgie Fame in the ?60s, but more recently has dabbled in jazz, musical-comedy and witty bossa nova.

BRIT JAZZ FEST 2011:
CHRIS BARBER BAND + ANDY DAVIES QUINTET

Intriguing double bill featuring iconic British jazz legend Chris Barber, a mainstay of the British jazz scene since the ?50s, with Welsh trumpeter Andy Davies. Barber played trombone with Ken Colyer in 1949 and began leading his own bands in which he played trombone and double bass in 1950. The likes of Ottilie Patterson and Lonnie Donegan made their name with Barber, and while his band played traditional jazz in the New Orleans style, Barber is equally at home with ragtime, swing, blues and R&B.  He has worked with other artists including Louis Jordan and Dr. John and in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Barber was responsible for arranging the first UK tours of seminal blues artists such as Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters. He appears here with the latest version of his band featuring Bob Hunt (trombone), Peter Rudeforth and Mike ?Magic? Henry (trumpets), Richard Exall, Amy Roberts and David Horniblow (reeds), Joe Farler (banjo and guitar), Jackie Flavelle (bass) and long standing member Gregory Beck (drums) as well as Barber himself on trombone. Hardbop trumpeter Davies completes the bill leading a fine band playing a mixture of hard bop staples and his own fine compositions.

This ?jazz poetry party? features established and upcoming spoken word poets & singers who continue the age-old tradition of intertwining jazz and performance poetry. Gilles Peterson endorsed trumpeter Matthew Halsall is one of the UK?s brightest talents. A gifted trumpeter with a beautiful, expressive tone, his music draws on his love of spiritual and modal jazz as well as the glories of ?60s British jazz. For tonight?s very special show he is joined by Coltrane inspired saxophonist Nat Birchall for a heartfelt tribute to the music of John and Alice Coltrane. Expect beautiful explorations of such classics as Afro-Blue, A Love Supreme and Journey Into Satchidananda alongside soulful originals, also played with real panache by his ace band featuring Cinematic Orchestra drummer Luke Flowers and jazz-harpist Rachel Gladwin. They are joined in this very special double bill by multi-talented UK vibes legend Orphy Robinson, a founder member of the Jazz Warriors, here presenting his new band CodeFive featuring ex Art Blakey saxophonist Jean Toussaint,  and a stellar rhythm section of pianist Pat Thomas bassist Dudley Phillips and drummer Kenrick Rowe.

TOMMY SMITH?S KARMA + NEWT
Hailed on arrival by critics as the toughest and most creative group of his career, Tommy Smith?s KARMA sees the brilliant Scottish saxophonist lead a band of virtuosic musicians on a deeply grooving acid jazz adventure that draws on influences from around the world. Featuring Tommy Smith (saxes, shakuhatchi, synth), Kevin Glasgow (electric bass), Steve Hamilton (piano, synth), Alyn Cosker (drums). They are joined in this intriguing double-bill of far-reaching Scottish jazz by NeWt, who draw on jazz and improvisation alongside elements of rock, ambient/electronic and folk/world influences. NeWt features ambient guitarist Graeme Stephen, drummer Chris Wallace and trombonist Chris Greive who plays both acoustically, and through effects units including octave pedals which make the horn sound like an otherwordly electric bass.

29 year old, Gwilym Simcock is one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the British scene.  Able to move effortlessly between jazz and classical music, he can, at times, inhabit both worlds and has been described as stylistically reminiscent of Keith Jarrett, complete with ?harmonic sophistication and subtle dovetailing of musical traditions? as well as being a pianist of ?exceptional?, ?brilliant? and ?dazzling? ability.  His music has been widely acclaimed as ?engaging, exciting, often unexpected, melodically enthralling, complex and wonderfully optimistic? and he appears here with bassist Yuri Goloubev and drummer James Maddren. Support comes from Islington based guitarist Stephano D’Silva here performing material by his father, the late great Amancio D’Silva who performed with the likes of Joe Harriott and Norma Winstone.

MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND + SEAMING TO TRIO
Led by maverick producer Matthew Herbert and conceived almost by accident as a result of a film score he was writing, The Matthew Herbert Big Band now has two acclaimed albums and a string of prestigious international performances under its belt. From the Sydney Opera House and Montreaux Jazz Festival to London?s Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Hall, Herbert?s band has thrilled audiences across the globe with its theatrical and visually stunning shows. Herbert?s musical approach is defined largely by his engagement with sound itself. Though classically trained, his instrument of choice is the sampler, with many of his best known tracks built around field recordings made at specific times and places.
The dialogue between the classic sound and instrumentation of the Big Band and Herbert?s relentlessly spontaneous and experimental approach continues in live performance. While the electrifying power and energy of 16 musicians breaths life into his compositions, Herbert constantly explores new possibilities, often by sampling the band and audience live on stage. Support comes from British-born Manchester-based, Chinese singer-songwriter, keyboardist and clarinettist who has performed with the likes of The Herbaliser and Mr. Scruff.

TERRY REID BAND

Legendary, late-’60s, blue-eyed, Brit soul singer, nick-named ?Super Lungs?, and perhaps best known for his samba-influenced blues rock masterpiece ‘The River’. Terry Reid has an impossibly rich story to tell of a life from teen rock prodigy through his years in rock ?n? roll.  He possesses an extraordinary, guttural vocal talent and is often called the finest British blue-eyed soulman.
