Surface Festival – London’s Semi Final Showcases – Friday 22nd July, 2011
This energetic and vibrant band sings temple vibes, a reggae afrobeat music that takes in traditional African instruments, jazz, rock and melodies.
Jahcub spends hours working in his studio before taking his music to sound engineers. He’s incredibly talented and a multi-instrumentalist who can sing and play bass, drums, keyboards, lead guitar and rhythm guitar.
Nigerian born Jacob Abrahams was influenced by musicians like Bob Marley, The Beatles and Eric Clapton. Now mainly London and Mumbai based, he wants to spread awareness about the culture of his homeland.
He believes in what he sees as street music. Jahcub wants to write about how people can focus and triumph, despite our tendency to be swept away by life’s problems.
Jahcub, “Nigeria’s hottest live musician” according to Mumbai publication Mid Day, performed a 4 song set to an excited audience.
In Shine we were reminded that our dreams need to glow in the light of a rather dark and forbidding world, whilst Wadada talked about peace and love. What’s Religion Got To Do With Love? was about the need for tolerance between those with different beliefs and how religion can destroy love. This One Life stressed the importance of not losing one’s own personal identity.
Now through to the Surface Festival regional finals, a delighted and ecstatic audience will eagerly await Jahcub’s return in September.
