Introducing Lanu

| On 16, Jul 2011

“Fall” featuring Megan Washington is the second single from Lanu’s acclaimed album ‘Her 12 Faces’, which came out in March on Tru Thoughts. The official single release date is 15th August but the lead track has been picked as Amazon UK’s Track Of The Day, so it will be available well upfront as a free download on 27th June in the UK. It will then be made available for free from Bandcamp from Monday 4th July, to fans around the world.

Taken from the album, “Fall” is a lush and flowing lament to a relationship in turmoil, with a beautiful lilting melody that brings out the veiled emotive side to singer Megan Washington’s voice. With support from the likes of Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 2 and 6Music on the album’s release, this classic sounding song was crying out for a single release and provides the perfect foil for the first single, “Beautiful Trash”, a quirky summery ditty that told of the first flush of romance. The video to “Fall” will be released on the Tru Thoughts YouTube on 27th June to tie in with the single promotion, and it directly continues the theme of the “Beautiful Trash” clip, which has had around 100,000 views in a few months. It is directed once again by Lucy Dyson, whose stunning animation style, developed for this Lanu project, brings added splendour and charm to the song.

The two bonus tracks on this single package will be available on the release date, and are very much worth the wait. The first is a Hint Remix of “Fall”, in which he introduces an intense shifting beat and subtle bassy backdrop, lightening the effect with woozy treble hooks and trills for a unique suspenseful atmosphere. Lanu’s Tru Thoughts label-mate Hint is earning a formidable reputation for his remixes, which have recently been played by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 among other tastemakers. The second bonus is a folky acoustic version of the irresistible first single, “Beautiful Trash”, which heads off in the opposite direction with a beautiful lullaby effect.

‘Her 12 Faces’ flows effortlessly between finely crafted indie-leaning pop songs and lush instrumental/electro pieces; the stunning album from producer/guitarist Lanu creates a sonic world where Beat culture collides with indie, dream pop, lounge and folk music. It marks a stylistic point of departure for the prolific musician better known as Lance Ferguson, the bandleader and creative force behind acclaimed Australian funk outfit The Bamboos, and has been covered in Word, Uncut, Clash and many more. Lanu’s vision is paired with the captivating Platinum-selling vocalist Megan Washington – one of Australia’s biggest and brightest new stars – for a mix of modern, kooky immediacy and timeless charm. Think the eclectic, crossover appeal of Little Dragon, Feist, Emiliana Torrini, or Janelle Monae.

“Beautiful Trash”, released in February, was a supreme nugget of outsider pop, supported with major UK radio play from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), Nemone (BBC 6Music), Don Letts (BBC 6Music), John Kennedy (XFM), The Selector (NME Radio) and was featured in Record of the Day and Word Magazine, as well as being iTunes UK Single of the Week. Elsewhere, it was A-listed on Triple J national radio in Australia, and heavily promoted by Starbucks and iTunes in the US.
