Art Brut have been confirmed to appear at this year’s Benicassim Festival on July 15th and a month later release a new single ‘Clever Clever Jazz’.
‘Clever Clever Jazz’, the second single from ‘Brilliant! Tragic!’, was initially a riposte once used by Eddie Argos. As Eddie explains, “This is a song about a band playing their first show. That feeling that what you are doing is very important even though you are playing to an empty room filled with just two people from work and the band you are supporting. Most of the things I mention in it are stories from my first band The Art Goblins. Although it was Art Brut that got heckled with ‘Play one you know’ the first time we played in Salem Oregon, it’s still one of my favourites. The title ‘Clever Clever Jazz’ comes from a heckle that the Art Goblins got when we were playing one of our first shows; some of the audience covered their ears and started shouting ‘That’s not music’ at us. I replied, ‘It is, it’s clever clever jazz and you just don’t understand it’ as I’ve always been a bit of a prick. Since then, I’ve always kind of thought of that excited feeling of a first gig as clever clever jazz.
‘Clever Clever Jazz’ is also the opening strip in Art Brut’s recently released comic; it’s a tale encapsulating the song’s meaning of a band experiencing playing their debut gig, created by Bryan Lee O’Malley (Scott Pilgrim series), please see the attached PDF. The 28 page comic is born out of an idea from the fertile mind of Art Brut’s eradite front person Eddie Argos and is available on the bands website.
