With the imminent launch of RADIO SOULWAX: David & Stephan Dewaele AKA 2ManyDJs/Soulwax have announced details of a pioneering new way to experience their unique record collections & musical exploration in theprivacy of your own home, head or iPad.
RADIO SOULWAX has been over 2 & half years in development and will launch on July 4th 2011 with six separate themed hours of audio & accompanying visual animation. It has evolved and morphed from a simple original idea to a full multi–sensory media experience. Do not be confused or put off by the use of the term ‘Radio’ here as music is but one side to this experience. Together with the projects artistic director Fergus Purcell they have also created a unique accompanying visual channel to boot, which would be just as much Music TV as it is radio – if such a thing still existed in 2011.
The visuals you will see here are crafted, inspired and lovingly animated using the imagery from the sleeves of the very records that shape each and every thematic hour in the 24-hour mix. At times the visuals themselves have even driven, informed and helped re-imagine theaudio parts you’ll hear simultaneously. It is an integral part of the unique charm of RADIO SOULWAX and one which is often the hardest to get across – This isn’t just nostalgia for music boffins! Here, fans of animation, comedy, art or even god forbid, seventies sleeve nudity may well be tickledtoo. Musical train-spotters will also be in heaven! But here, each and every one of these painstakingly produced hours is fun, different and geared to trigger individual reactions unique to the viewer, listener, consumer etc.
As technology has advanced and social networking has continued to take over the planet, Soulwax’s loyal fan base;that go out to see them DJ & perform month after month, year after yearhave become a closer, tighter, more interactive community. Their message boards bustle with activity, nostalgia, excitement and the exchange of experience and content.
RADIO SOULWAX is fun, chaotic and best of all – it is free. Due to copyright & publishing legalities – the content of the mixes broadcast cannot and will never be sold, which considering the time, money and love spent personally developing thisproject is utterly unique in itself, especially during this new age of the music industry.
Together they have curated from the depths of their own tastes and imagination, explored sonically and visually to willingly bring an experience to anyone and everyone with an open mind. Not every hour willnecessarily be to your tastes but that is also part of its beauty.
In addition to the live online feed – Radio Soulwax will be available to stream and download via a fully interactive iPhone/iPad/Android application. This can be downloaded from the Apple App store for iPad & iPhone & Google App store for Android from Monday onwards and will allow users greater freedom to listen away from the broadcast schedule online.
As a teaser for what is to come, from June 30th onwards you can immerse yourself in ‘INTROVERSY’ a special mix on www.radiosoulwax.com. “This is a mix we did for BBC Radio 1 a while ago, and it is actually quite a good introduction to Radio Soulwax as quite lot of tracks that are featured in the mix will come back in later hours to follow. The animated sleeves give the mix a whole new dimension!”
For lovers of fun, music, art, technology, film, chaos or curiosity…RADIO SOULWAX goes fully online on July 4th at: www.radiosoulwax.com
For those of you who don’t know anything about Soulwax or 2manydjs….Their musical history is checkered with highlights. The sons of a noted Belgian radio DJ, the pair formed a rock band named Soulwax, who released several acclaimed records and toured extensively. At this time the brothers were also concurrently DJing under the names The Flying Dewaele Brothers & 2manyDJs to rapturous response both in clubs, on Belgian radio and beyond. In 2002 their massively acclaimed debut mix album 2manyDJs – As heard on Radio Soulwax Volume 2 was released on an unsuspecting world. It changed the face of dance mix compilations forever simply by splicing hundreds of rock, electro, dance, hip hop and other classics from the depths of their vaults together. It was also fun!!! And somehow they had managed to do what so many had failed to do previously – bring that fun and chaos from the club into your home.
500,000 + sales & 8 years later it remains a must have for house parties, holidays and individual experiences the world over. Their sound and style has been mimicked and imitated a million times (but never bettered) and not to mention pretty much every mix they have ever done has been bootlegged and sold at extortionate prices on by opportunists in every corners of the earth. Radio Soulwax sees them taking the concept of the mix album and re-inventing it yet again.
They’ve also since become two of the busiest, most in demand DJs/ Remixers/Musicians /Producers in the world with far too many credits to list here (see below Wikipedia link if you are so inclined). They have also toured consistently, both as a live electronic rock band and as 2manyDJs (and often both at the same time), headlining tour after tour, festival after festival, year in year out throughout the world. 2011 will be no exception with UK headline slots already confirmed at Lovebox & Reading/Leeds. The past few years have seen them perform in front of millions of people across the globe and their schedule shows no signs of letting up. In 2007 they created theirmuch loved Soulwaxmas event which now takes place annually in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy & Spain in the run up to Christmas, andwhich this year saw them perform to 15,000 rabid fans in London alone.
This isn’t even including their two studio albums 2004’s Any Minute Now or its2005 companion album Nite Versions- the entire opus remixed for the dancefloor or for that matter their mighty compendium of remixes of other artists. In 2008, the chaos of their Radio Soulwax events, the passion of their fans and the frenzy of their live performances was beautifully captured in Part of The Weekend Never Dies, a film by acclaimed young director Saam Farahmand. It also helped to show firsthand the unquestionable work ethic of the Dewaele brothers, something which RADIO SOULWAX is truly testament to.
