On the 29 June in Paris, we are extremely pleased to announce a very special DJ set from Irmin Schmidt & Kumo entitled The Sound of Can – Can Archives Special. This will feature material pulled from the entire history of the Can archives, using previously unheard material, which is set for release on Mute.
Also confirmed for Paris, is special guest DJ, Mute publishing artist Bertrand Burgalat (Tricatel Records)
The first 30 people through the door on each night will receive a copy of the Mute Vörwarts compilation and some special Mute merchandise.
Beth Jeans Houghton, Mute’s newest signing, has recently completed her debut album, produced by Ben Hillier. It’s a thrilling ride through the looking glass, full of coded lyrics and musical twists and turns. Beth herself has said that she wants her music to sound like she’s marching to war, and it frequently does. Like a psychedelic Boudica, she’s carried into battle by her band, The Hooves Of Destiny,
Big Deal is Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe, an American boy and British girl who, as GQ say, have “just the right amount of fuzz and melancholy to tug at the heartstrings”. Big Deal play ambitious songs riddled with ambivalent lyrics of adult compromise and teen angst. They both sing, they both write, and they both play live, creating a tender, razor sharp noise.
S.C.U.M is Thomas Cohen (vocal), Bradley Baker (machines), Samuel Kilcoyne (moog), Melissa Rigby (drums) and Huw Webb (Bass), a London five-piece who have hammered a wedge into the cracking facade of the UK music scene over the last two years, splitting it into the factions of old and new. Their debut album, produced by Ken Thomas and co-produced by Jolyon Thomas, will be released on Mute in autumn 2011.
