Thrill Jockey are pleased to announce the latest recordings from Future Islands. Before the Bridge will be released on 18 July as a limited edition vinyl 7-inch single featuring two exclusive new tracks; the A-side title track as well as the B-side “Find Love” which will only be available on the vinyl pressing. The pre-order is live and running and supplies won’t last long. http://www.thrilljockey.com/catalog/index.html?id=105379 –

To celebrate the release, Future Islands are making the A-side “Before the Bridge” available for free download (for the b-side you’ll just have to wait for the 7″!). Watch out for their upcoming full-length album later this year.

The 7″ format exists for tight concept records like Before the Bridge, the first release of 2011 from Baltimore-based trio Future Islands. Here they serve up two addictive new tunes exploring the flip sides of love – from the hopeful first encounter to the painful final parting – each threatening to take control of your turntable once the needle hits the wax.

Impassioned A-side “Before the Bridge” finds the band returning to their North Carolina roots, recorded in Elizabeth City with close collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda (producer of the band’s most recent LP, 2010’s In Evening Air, and Dan Deacon’s Bromst). Exclusive B-side “Find Love,” recorded in Baltimore with Gwazda, is an ecstatic, dancefloor-ready jam brimming with song-of-the-summer potential. Both tracks feature live drums and additional percussion by Denny Bowen (Double Dagger).
Limited to 750 hand-numbered copies and featuring a cover-sleeve painting by DC-based artist D’Metrius Rice, Before the Bridge is simultaneously a must for the already converted and a perfect starter pack for new listeners.

Future Islands’ passionate pop is the creative work of J. Gerrit Welmers (synthesizers and programming), William Cashion (bass), and Samuel T. Herring (vocals). Herring’s heart-wrenching vocals are the centerpiece as he cries out to the listener, at times with a whispering croon, and at others with an emotional plea; he has been called “one of the most magnetic front men in indie rock.” Welmers’ layers of synths and drums create the landscape for Cashion’s melodic and punching bass with simply irresistible results. The band will continue to tour extensively in Europe throughout the summer with additional US dates. Full list of EU dates below.

“The album is a bottom-of-the-heart outpouring of pop music. Harrowing and addictive in equal measure” BBC Radio One website

“Future Islands conjure a collective of gorgeous and unpretentious loveliness reminiscent of early New Order… a downright dream of an album” CLASH
“… move(s) you to tears whilst propelling your feet towards a dancefloor of dreams… One minute he’s all sweet Kurt Wagner croon and the next a snarling vocal assault or Tom Waits-esque guttural growl. We don’t know what the hell Future Islands do to us but we love it all the same.” The Fly
