GOING BACK TO HIS ROOTS: STEVE MAC RELEASES THIRD ALBUM ON SAVED RECORDS

Steve Mac is back with an incandescent new full-length album full of life, depth and emotion. Roots is a thorough investigation of influences, reworked into a vivid clutch of new tracks that flow gracefully in different directions.

The bookends of the album, Waiting (reprise) and Waiting, are astonishing, showing how subtle alterations can drastically alter the flavour of a track. The balance between elegance and aggression is thematic, with tracks such as The Noise Bastard an intense club-ready counterbalance to the album’s more ambient moments.

Fantastic collaborative work is a strong feature. Nic Fanciulli, label boss of Saved Records, partners on Give It To Me and Mark Broom, a Saved Records regular, also appears on the album on Going Down. This track, built on a silky spoken-word sample, is instantly memorable, tipping its hat to Mac’s 80’s hip-hop roots in a thoroughly modern way.

Roots is Steve Mac’s third album released on Saved Records, a natural home for his productions. The label’s reputation as a provider of amazing dance music is undeniable, yet also gives the space and support for Mac to explore the experimental, post-modern aspects of his work.

Mac’s career in music so far has been nothing short of enviable. He has worked with the likes of Todd Terry, Danny Rampling, Jocelyn Brown and Paul Woodford and has, since the 1990s, been regarded as one of the highest calibre remixing artists around. Recently, his work has been featured on such noteworthy labels as Rejected, Ovum, Intimacy, SCI+TEC and Renaissance. He also has his own label, sMACK Recordings.

Live he is also someone not to be missed. As someone who started scratching at a mere 11 years old, he has honed his craft to the maximum. He uses a staggering variety of equipment in his sets including multiple decks, CDJ’s, FX and samplers to create raucous, funk-infused sets that always win over an audience.
