Brighton art-pop quartet Pope Joan return with their new single ‘The Celebration’ due for release on July 4th. Following on from the pop stylings of previous single ‘A Drowning’, Pope Joan reveal a darker side with their latest offering, ‘The Celebration’.
Centered around an RnB beat layered with sparse piano and feedback, ‘The Celebration’ explodes into a wall of swirling organ and synth bass. “It’s about the aftermath of a celebration, where tragedy is looming” explains vocalist and songwriter Sammy Aaron Jr.
The single was produced by the band themselves, working alongside mastering engineer Mike Marsh (The Kills, Nick Cave, Hot Chip).
‘The Celebration’ is backed by b-side and live favourite, ‘Billy’s Bride’. The dizzying guitar swells and primal beats beautifully support a story of obsessing over the wrong kind of things.
Having already captured audiences at The Great Escape and through support slots with Paris Suit Yourself, Twin Shadow and Mazes, Pope Joan are a thrilling live prospect for shows and festivals this summer.
‘The Celebration’ is available from all good online distributors from July 4th.
