Graz – UNESCO World City of Heritage and City of Design
The city of Graz has just been awarded the coveted City of Design status, also from UNESCO, to go along with its World Heritage status. The city will benefit from the City of Design status, from the user interface of the city and the self-conception of the Grazers right through to the economy – such as tourism, trade and gastronomy. Graz is very much a forward-thinking town, and this inspiring recognition will keep it evolving. And of course springfestival is incredibly proud to be a part of this process.
Tim Ertl, one of springfestival’s directors, explains: “We feel we have got another really strong lineup coming together in beautiful Graz, which is now incredibly a UNESCO City of Design too. This has always been a big part of what we do, to use the city’s incredible spaces and places. Graz is an alluring and romantic city with some really wonderful locations, so we will again be in the famous Dom im Berg cave, as well as for the first time the futuristic Helmut List Halle for the first two nights, including the opening concert with Sizarr, Caribou and Jesse Rosse. We have also expanded further to use the Stadthalle venue for the last two nights, including shows from Hercules and Love Affair, Crystal Fighters and Patrick Wolf.”

The City of Graz, Austria
Graz is a stunning city in south-east Austria, awarded with the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999 which was renewed in 2010, along with European Capital of Culture status in 2003. It features architectural wonders originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroads for centuries. Being situated in the cultural borderland between Central Europe, Italy and the Balkan States, Graz absorbed various influences from the neighbouring regions and thus received its exceptional townscape. Today the old town consists of over 1000 buildings, their age ranging from Gothic to Contemporary.
In the last few years some ground breaking modern new public buildings have been erected in the city. The most famous of these include the Kunsthaus (house of modern art) and the “Murinsel” (island in the Mur), an island made of steel, situated in the river.
Graz is a warren of winding streets and passages, and wide cobbled plazas; a cosmopolitan café culture resides along with boutique shops, hip hotels and access to a beautiful region of Europe.
