Democracy of One is the debut album from The Devlin’s Colin Devlin
Album track The Heart Wont be Denied featured in the most recent series of One Tree Hill shown on E4 late last year and the video to the same tracks can be seen at here:
As The Devlins, Colin and his brother Peter defined the cinematic rock sound of the 1990s via a series of internationally acclaimed albums that generated tracks used in dozens of film and television productions. The Devlins atmospheric grooves transcended both genre and era, earning a four-star review in Rolling Stone for their debut, Drift, and worldwide praise for subsequent efforts.
The sound of a songwriter taking chances and stepping off the deep end, unencumbered by the need to please a vast fan-base or for that matter a record label. It brims with bittersweet interludes and passages of gentle loveliness. Hes also got a penchant for rocking out …enjoy what may well be the finest record of his career. Metro (Ireland): Album of the week
Democracy of One takes singer Colin Devlins reputation for erudite simplicity to a whole new level. With this intimate solo album helmed by producer Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright), Devlin explores matters of the heart in a lush acoustic setting that puts his voice front and centre, adding emotional nuance to singles The Heart Wont Be Denied,Refuge, and Raise the Dead.
Released in his native Ireland in 2010, and hot on the heels of a standout live performance at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and a nomination for “Best Solo Male”at The 2010 IMTV Awards in November 2010.
Swoonfull, solo effort from Devlins songwriter in chief. Recorded in Montreal with a smooth production from Pierre Marchand this is a classy affair, replete with memorable tunes, atmospheric textures and lyrics that explore the emotional landscapes of our times. Its very much a solo record too. A sonic palette of mainly acoustic guitars, piano and occasional strings adorn tunes. The rhythm section is a tad more upfront on a handful of cuts including the slow-burning Strategies and the title track, a syncopated mid-tempo rocker featuring a gorgeous harmony vocal by Canadian singer-songwriter Emm Gryner. If Prefab Sprout had come up with something like this in their heydey it would have gone top ten. Hotpress: HHHH
