‘Neon Truth’ out May 23rd

This Leeds band’s edgy indie-soul is surely chart bound. Ones to watch – Sunday Times Culture 

 

 

Various Cruelties have announced details of the release of their debut single. Neon Truth will be self-released on their own Almanac Recordings on Monday 23rd May 2011.

Released on limited 7” and CD and as a 4 track download, the single tracks were recorded on the Isle of Wight with Boe Weaver.

The download also feature 2 demo tracks which within weeks of posting online in January received Radio One daytime play, Zane Lowe support, Maida Vale Sessions, Rob Da bank SOTW, an XFM playlist and Lamacqs 6 Music band of the week.  Due to demand the demos were eventually pressed up as an extremely limited 7” which they predominantly sold via Ebay, Rough Trade London, Pure Groove London, Piccadilly Manchester and Insound New York – the 7” sold-out within days.

Playing live since December 2010 they have spent this time playing shows alongside Villagers, The Vaccines, Mumford’s Communion Night, Funeral Party, Fixers and Tribes.  The full list of forthcoming shows are as follows:

Named after an Ed Ruscha painting of the same name – the Talking Heads famously used the image for the cover of their Sand in the Vaseline compilation – Various Cruelties is based around Liam O’Donnell.

Born in London to Scottish father and an Irish mother (a distant relative of Oscar Wilde) he spent his youth singing at Leeds blues parties and squat run pirate radio stations where he discovered the Clash, The Specials, Etta James, Devendra Banhart and Otis Redding.
