THURSDAY UNVEIL STUNNING NEW MUSIC VIDEO
‘Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart’
The fantastic video for Thursday’s ‘Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart’ draws its style from the paper-cut artwork that graces the cover of the band’s latest album ‘No Devolución’, originally conceived by artist Mia Pearlman. Frontman Geoff Rickly says he put word out to friends that he was looking for artists who used a similar medium, and discovered Davy and Kristin McGuire, a British couple who blend pop-up book-style artwork and projections into performance art. Their treatment for the ‘Magnets’ video felt very familiar to Rickly.
“In the past that’s been so much of what Thursday has used — images of transportation, cities, metropolises, power-lines have always been a running theme,” he tells SPIN, who premiered the music video on their site. “We decided we wouldn’t tell them anything about what we do, and we’d let them bring some fresh new scenes, but when it came back, we were like, ‘Oh, that’s weird. Here we are again.'”
Geography prevented an in-person collaboration, so McGuire directed the members of Thursday from England via Skype, telling them how to shoot their scenes in front of a green screen at a friend’s studio. “We’re hoping [Skype] can hook us up and maybe give us some money to present that,” Rickly jokes. And since they were just bought by Microsoft — for $7 billion — maybe they can!
Rickly says he loved the finished product so much that he’s considering ways to involve the McGuires in the band’s upcoming tours, or even as an opening act.
