Liane Carroll to perform with Quartet West

Charlie Haden adds third guest to his distinguished line-Up

Saturday 21 May

Charlie Haden Quartet West

with special guests Melody Gardot, Ruth Cameron and Liane Carroll

Bassist Charlie Haden today announced that award-winning British singer-pianist Liane Carroll is to join him  at the opening night of his weekend residency at London’s Barbican on May 21st .

Carroll is arguably one of the world’s great jazz singers, capable of great vocal virtuosity – swinging like hell one moment, with a tender interpretation the next.  Her performances are underpinned by a soulful honesty that gives her an ‘on the edge’ gravitas that is utterly gripping.   Carroll joins Haden’s Quartet West group with previously announced guests, Melody Gardot and Ruth Cameron  who perform their songs from the acclaimed album Sophisticated Ladies, released on May 16th on Decca/Emarcy .

Haden’s Quartet West features saxophonist Ernie Watts, pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Rodney Green,  with this performance being the first London appearance since 2007 of one of the most distinctive bands in jazz.

The following night, May 22nd sees his more experimental, radical and political work with his acclaimed Liberation Music Orchestra.  Co-led by Haden and the brilliant arranger Carla Bley, this Anglo-American ensemble features stellar soloists from both sides of the Atlantic.

Prior to the performance, Charlie Haden joins BBC broadcaster Alyn Shipton to discuss his life and music, recorded for BBC Radio 3 Jazz Library. This takes place at 5.30pm in the Fountain Room.  It is a free event though tickets may be obtained from the Barbican box office.

Please note that the screening of ‘Rambling Boy’ is cancelled.
