The Jezabels – Hurt Me

| On 15, May 2011

The Jezabels, a four piece band grew up in Byron Bay, a town split between a tourist surf paradise hippie haven image and the darker more aggressively macho metalcore scene of the townies, release their debut single Hurt Me.  The band melts atmospheres taken from classic music, listen to the piano intro that seems to be written by Michael Nyman, with 80s suggestion, the singing style is definitely inspired by the beautiful Kim Carnel of “Bette Davis’ Eyes”.

The result is an original tune, part melancholic, part lustful, with a fast-paced juddering drum that increases the sense of anxiety, like a beating heart. Haylet Mary gives the tune a dark intensity making it one the best single heard this year.

Hurt me never opens out to an airy refrain and this leaves me a sense of sane unsatisfaction that it’s the best quality of the tune.

I look forward to listen to more, I’m sure they are one of the bands to watch in 2011.
