Mother Mother – Eureka

Fresh from a couple of gigs at Texas’ SXSW festival, Canadian 5 piece Mother Mother return to the indie rock world with their third release Eureka. The band fail to deviate from their former indie-rock sound, expanding on it with big numbers including the Beck influenced The Stand. After a 3 year gap since the bands first major release, it seems Eureka was well worth the wait.
Throughout the course of Eureka, Mother Mother constantly churn up unconventional Indie which sounds a treat. Elements of dance interweave well with guitar, which is a rarity in modern indie where most bands just throw the two together and the end result is worse than the coverage of the royal wedding. However Mother Mother have clearly found the right balance and have crafted a surprisingly wonderful album. If the band do have a fault, it’s that the style of the vocals do eventually wear you down. The almost comedy-esque approach Ryan Guldemond and co take to the songs does build up like an annoying crescendo, although to be fair they do suit the music for the most part.
Mother Mother are definitely worth a listen considering the state of indie music today. The bands mixture of styles works well and avoids the horror of a Klaxons sound, whilst still managing to push barriers within the indie genre. Fans of alternative indie will love this, hell even more conventional indie lovers like myself will enjoy this too.
