WOOD FESTIVAL: POWERED 100% by renewable energy

WOOD & TRUCK festivals were 2 of only 14 festivals awarded Industry Green status yesterday.

WOOD has also been shortlisted for the forthcoming MusicWeek Green Business Award and listed in the culture top 10 of The Guardian’s 100 Finest Campsites last week too!

ALREADY AWARDED:

BEST FESTIVAL at The Oldie Travel Awards & THE GOLD GREENER FESTIVAL AWARD

shortlisted for Best Toilets at the Festival Awards

With over half of tickets already sold, WOOD festival really is the must-go-to festival; it’s the perfect start to the summer.  With the event selling out in advance last year, families across the country are clamouring for tickets. Having had a few requests from those not wanting to camp, but still wanting to enjoy the magical WOOD festival, day tickets have just been put on sale. Available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday they include entry to the festival and access to all workshops going on that day.

But WOOD isn’t about just standing around and watching bands, though you could be forgiven for doing that with a rootsy line-up that includes WILLY MASON, ELIZA CARTHY BAND, THEA GILMORE and MAMA ROSIN.

We like to keep a bit of rock & roll to proceedings too – two artists just added to the bill have links to legendary LA cult heroes the Brian Jonestown Massacre: Sarabeth Tucek is the dreamy chanteuse who appears at the end of the movie Dig!, while many of desert-western soundtrack ensemble SPINDRIFT used to be in the band before choosing twangy Morricone guitars as the future. Canadian quartet ZEUS are signed to Broken Social Scene’s ultra-hip Arts & Crafts label, and provide a fine line in Beatlesy power-pop, and we are excited to present one of the first ever solo shows by Michele Stodart of The Magic Numbers, as she warms up to release her debut album and tour with Villagers.

WOOD is also about trying new things, learning news skills, getting involved and learning something. With over 100 workshops and talks going on across the weekend, you’re bound to find a hidden talent, discover a new hobby, or find out something previously undreamt of (who knew you could make rope from nettles?).

Workshops include:

DIY Wormeries / Upsidedown Tomatoes / Make Your Own Bunting / Willow Sculptures for Adults: Make a Giant Dragonfly/ Performance of Shadowplay / Hedgehogs and Suburban Wildness / Lanterns from Jam Jars / Make Musical Instruments From Junk / Willow Sculptures for Kids: Make a Giant Dragonfly / Garland Pom Brooches / Yoga for Children / Drama 4 Evry1 / Fascinators- Glamourous Reclaimed Head Wear / Junk Samba Band / Yoga for Adults / Home Composting and General Gardening Advice / Making Nettle Cord  Animal Spirit Medicine / iFOUNDSOUND:  A Sound Journey / Jewelry Making / Decorative 3D flowers/plants / Musical Munchkins /

…breathe….

All our workshops designed to be fun as well as educational, and some could even be said to be inspirational – giving you something to take away for the other 363 days of the year.  For a full list of workshops visit our brand new website dedicated to all things WOOD:

CYCLE TO WOOD!

With the event running on 100% renewable energy the sensible option seems to arrive under your own steam, as it were, and cycle there.

The organisers of the festival have teamed up with local ‘cyclomaniacs’ The Oxford Cycle Workshop to co-ordinate the cycle ride to WOOD festival, setting off from The Magic Cafe at 2pm on Friday 20th May, and arriving at Braziers Park a few hours later. Don’t worry about carrying your tents, they’ll be transported separately so you can concentrate on enjoying the ride.  Those taking part will be rewarded with a  lovely picnic half way and a cold pint upon arrival.

Says Dan Harris of OCW:

“Last year’s ride was fantastic, with over 40 people joining us – I’m a massive fan of Wood and am really looking forward to spending the week in the countryside, enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Braziers Park, and of course the great music.”

The Oxford Cycle workshop will then be sticking around to help power the festival, with one of the stages being powered completely by the festival audience using pedal generators. They are also going to be hosting workshops throughout the weekend, teaching people how to maintain bikes, which all of us would do well to attend!

INFO:

WOOD is one of Britain’s greenest events, powered completely on renewable energy, harnessing the power of the sun, the wind and even the people who attend the event (through a cycle-powered cinema and disco), there are composting toilets (no portaloos!) and a stage made of, you guessed it, WOOD.

WOOD received a Gold award from A Greener Festival, Best Festival at The Oldie Travel Awards, Industry Green 2 star rating, and is in the final shortlist for the MusicWeek Green Business award. And of course, those composting loos with a view were shortlisted for Best Toilets at the Festival Awards!
