Abigail Washburn began the year with an immensely successful UK tour and album launch that has found major critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. She returns in May to launch her first single at radio with a short tour with co writer and multi instrumentalist Kai Welch. Abigail has been touring extensively in the US including SXSW and is set to continue with appearances at Bonnaroo, Telluride and a tour of the West Coast this summer along with UK summer Festivals.
“A real gem”. – FRoots (Folk Roots)
“A lavish record that turns the heat under Washburn’s melting pot a further few notches” – The Guardian
“Purveyor of clawhammer banjostress turns outs something astonishing..”- Mojo 4*
“and very lovely it is too” – The Independent
“An interesting and Original album ..City Of Refuge is an album that gets better each time you listen to it. Washburn’s own beautiful clawhammer banjo playing is augmented by a brilliant ensemble cast of musicians to bring together what she has described as ‘a huge community record’.” – The Telegraph
“City of Refuge melds Washburn’s classic, old-time storytelling with indie-pop songwriter Kai Welch and renowned producer Tucker Martine creating “the best kind of crossover – one that anyone can find comfort in” (LA Times).
“gorgeous, joyful new sound” – Newsweek
“…Appalachia and folk-pop, with tinges of Asia and Bruce Springsteen” – Jon Pareles, The New York Times
“The indie influence makes City of Refuge seem almost mainstream in places and certainly less of an acquired taste than any of Washburn’s previous projects but it is far from being bland. Multi-textured and multicultural, though simple and soulful too, the album is for the most part just an inspiriting listen: original, inventive and twinkling” – The Line of Best Fit
“In her singing Washburn exhibits a versatility to match her bold creative leaps and everywhere the musical seasoning is finely judged” – Maverick.
