THE VICTORIAN ENGLISH GENTLEMENS CLUB
Single ‘A Conversation’
25th April 2011
The Victorian English Gentlemens Club return with a brand new single – the first to be taken from forthcoming third album, titled ‘Bag Of Meat’, their follow-up to 2009’s ‘Love On An Oil Rig’.
‘A Conversation’ is a conversation between a woman and her executioner just before her beheading. It’s made of one hundred and ninety-five seconds of a mandolin like a fairground, a guitar like an organ, falsetto singing and lots of heavy breathing. There’s no bass, and no drums in the chorus – on the sound advice of the late, great Buddy Holly: ”take the drums out of the chorus and you’ll have a massive hit on your hands”.
‘Screaming Fields of Mumbo Jumbo’ has two notes and two hundred and eight words that question why ghosts wouldn’t have more exciting pastimes – like throwing people in the sea – rather than moving books. It was inspired by an 80s synth pop song that we heard once in Belgium and never heard again. If anyone has any idea what it could have been, please get in touch.
