In January 2011, Generator called out for North East bands and solo artists to apply to play Evolution Emerging – the region’s biggest event for emerging music. With over 300 tracks submitted this year, the FULL LINEUP (see below) reflects the vast array of emerging talent from all styles of music across the region.
Previous events have seen headline sets from Field Music side-project The Week That Was, Detroit Social Club and Frankie & the Heartstrings.
2011’s event sees 24 emerging artists playing alongside our 3 Special Guest Headliners:
Lanterns on the Lake give us a sparking dose of cinematic indie. With their starry songs and lustrous melody, this band are quietly creating something truly magical and inspiring. The band have been championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Lauren Laverne and recently signed to the prestigious Bella Union record label releasing their debut album in 2011.
“Some of the loveliest, swooping celestial lushness we’ve heard in quite some time” Drowned In Sound
Teesside’s finest, The Chapman Family (pictured) bring their distortion fuelled antidote to a musical climate big on apathy and lacking integrity. 2010’s ‘All Fall’ was Artrocker’s single of the year and debut album ‘Burn Your Town’ finds the fertile black soil in the middle ground between The Horrors’ ‘Primary Colours’ and The Cure’s ‘Pornography’.
Hyde & Beast – Hyde is Dave Hyde (Futureheads drummer) and Beast is Neil Bassett (ex-Golden Virgins drummer). Hyde and Beast record an album. Hyde sing well. Album sound good. Beast happy. When playing live, Hyde and Beast are likely to become a six-person entity. The album, ‘Slow Down’, is a sprawling, gentle psychedelic mess and is due to be released on Tail Feather Records in May 2011.
Joe Frankland, Musician Support Manager at Generator says:
“Evolution Emerging has a strong track record for identifying artists who have gone on to gain wider national recognition. Highlights from 2010’s event included Let’s Buy Happiness (successfuk UK tours, performance at Glastonbury an much loved by BBC 6Music, NME, Drowned in Sound),Mammal Club (signed to Everybody’s Stalking records, played In the City and supported by BBC radio), We Are Knuckle Dragger (set to record their debut album in Chicago with Steve Albini) and Sharks Took the Rest (recently chosen as Nemon’s Record of the Week on BBC 6Music).”
“And we’re really pleased to announce an even stronger line-up this year. With the likes of Lanterns on the Lake and The Chapman Family headlining, it’s a great opportunity for new artists to play what is now the biggest regional event for emerging music.”
