Japanese Voyeurs – Get Hole

Complete with grotesque video, Japanese Voyeurs’ last single, ‘Milk Teeth’ caught my ears in a stranglehold with its bile-drenched, obscene power. Live, the band lived up to expectations, delivering a searing half-hour of heavy riffs and malignant vocals. Now, the sonic terrorists have returned with the new release: ‘Get Hole’.
And yes, right from the outset, it is three minutes of crushing guitars and breathy yet rabid vocals. The twin-riff assault is so distorted it almost concusses the listener, and the bass groove thunders down like leaden rain. All this, fronted by a queasily seductive Lolita-on-steroids croon and yowl, and backed by a loping, seductive metal drum beat powered by bass and cymbal. For the most part, this collision of saccharine and savage is deeply reminiscent of Daisy Chainsaw and Queen Adreena, although with a much more overtly metal bent. The off-kilter bridge throws a neat twist into the mix, and once again the band prove to have a great handle on the stop-start kicks that grunge really hammered into modern rock.
Once again, if you’re even slightly middle of the road in your tastes, you may with to look elsewhere. But if you want an unafraid bout of sludgy malevolence to liven up your life, Japanese Voyeurs provide it in fine quality.
