A CELEBRATION OF CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN SOUND AND VISION

The Barbican and the Canadian Independent Music Association present Canadian Blast, a celebration of contemporary Canadian sound and vision on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011. As part of their Blaze Summer Concert Series, The Barbican plays host to a day’s worth of cutting edge and critically acclaimed Canadian musicians and filmmakers. In the main hall, The Hidden Cameras will headline the main performance with their only London show on the summer, Woodpigeon plus a full band (his only London show as well) and Devon Sproule who will be joined on the day by Mantler, Sandro Perri and Ryan Driver. In the run up to the main event, the Foyer will play host to a series of free shows featuring former Spirit of the West member Linda McRae, and solo performances from Mantler, Sandro Perri, Maylee Todd and Ryan Driver. At 5PM, Chilly Gonzales’ critically acclaimed feature film, Ivory Tower, will be shown for free in the main hall. The film features Tiga, Feist and Peaches. The evening is curated and presented by Canadian Blast, the international showcasing brand of CIMA, the Canadian Independent Music Association. Canadian Blast is dedicated to showcasing the best Canadian talent in Europe from its headquarters in London. The day is the second of two days celebrating Canadian music, following on from the annual Canada Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square on July 1st. Together these events represent the largest Canada Day Celebrations outside of Canada. The event is part of Blaze. Blaze returns in June and July 2011 with a thrilling range of events in the Barbican and across East London. Major international artists, commissions and new works mark this third Blaze festival that takes place at the Barbican, Hackney Empire, Gillett Square, Wilton’s Music Hall and Rich Mix. A celebration of the boldest music from across the globe for East London, featuring UK exclusives and new commissions, Blaze is presented by the Barbican and is part of the CREATE Festival. CREATE11 is the fourth annual summer festival that celebrates Europe’s largest cultural quarter, the Olympic Host Boroughs where over 12,000 artists live and work. This year Blaze has joined forces with CREATE and forms its music strand. Blaze is supported by Arts Council England. Tickets for the performance in the main hall will range for £12.50 to £20, while foyer performances and film screenings will be free. All tickets purchases will come with a code for free download tracks from each of the showcasing artists, as well as other artists showcasing at Canadian Blast Events. Furthermore, this event is twinned with Canada Day in London celebrations. Now in its 6th year, Canada Day in London is an initiative of the Canadian community in the United Kingdom. The event showcases the best of Canadian music, sport, art, culture, tourism, business, food and drink to Londoners and visitors from around the world.
