Agnes Obel – Philharmonics

| On 11, Apr 2011

Philharmonics is the debut album release of Berlin based, Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel. Although Philharmonics has been available since the 7th of February 2011, PIAS Recordings have released a deluxe version of the album including five additional tracks which will be available in the UK from the 2nd of May on ‘Play It Again Sam’. She has already taken the number one spot in both The Netherlands and France, and now we’ll have the chance to hear her music in the UK.

The entirely self produced album opens with the instrumental piano track ‘Falling, Catching’ which really helps to set the character and mood of the album. The album throughout, consists of beautiful classical piano melodies matched by the softly sweet and hypnotic tone of Agnes’ voice. There is a simplistic beauty about the album creating a very tranquil and gentle ambience but in order to fully appreciate it, it’s key to be attentive.

Already gaining notoriety in in Germany through a Deutsch Telekom advert and being nominated for the Impala European independent Album Of The Year, it’s clear to see Agnes Obel has made a lasting impression of her musical ability. Agnes is set to play a small tour in the UK which begins on the 12th of April starting at London’s Bush Hall and followed by The Deaf Institute in Manchester on the 15th, Captain’s Rest in Glasgow on the 17th and ends at the Hare and Hound in Birmingham on the 18th of April.

Philharmonics by Agnes Obel is a wonderful exhibition of classical piano made viable to a modern day audience.
