Sankeys April Bank Holiday Weekenders – Manchester

| On 06, Apr 2011

The last three days of April are special. Apparently someone’s getting hitched and the rest of the country is partying to celebrate. Sankeys are no different, clutching together three nights that represent and embody the differing sides of their musical output.

Chart-topping young legend and DJ-god Calvin Harris joins Sankeys to kick start this long weekend on Thursday 28th. Equally happy rocking huge international festivals or dance floors across the world, Calvin is one of the scene’s greatest entertainers who quite simply knows how to rock any crowd into absolute mayhem. Having remixed everyone from Passion Pit to Kaiser Chiefs – as well as achieved huge acclaim for Dance Wiv Me – Calvin is one of the UK’s most enduring stars, and his Sankeys DJ-set is all set to be the stuff of legend. Kaluki founder and resident Ellesse supports.

Second up is a true Ancoats favourite: Laidback Luke’s overwhelming popularity with the Sankeys’ faithful also sees droves of his fans coming over from Liverpool too. Mancunia’s love for the Dutch-Filipino means some seriously good fun on Friday. An ‘honorary Swede’, Luke is one of the few artists that the Swedish House Mafia has imbued to be part of their familia, house music’s very own Tom Hagen. It’s easy to see why the biggest house DJs in the world has welcomed him into the fold; he is equally as scintillating in the main rooms’ format as they are.

Drafting huge hooky riffs around his razor electro basslines, Luke’s sound is all about hedonism that is big and clever. Having added dancefloor prowess to a eye-watering list of acts – Daft Punk, lack Eyed Peas, Calvin Harris and Moby have all got Laidback – he’s been one of Holland’s biggest draws since his debut album back in 1999, and a global sensation since his funk fuelled version of Jark Prongo’s ‘Rocket Base’ blew up in 2002 (the Salt N Pepa ‘Push It’ sampling tune was a Pete Tong favourite). Sankeys’ own boy Dillan Joseph supports.

Less than a day after Luke’s final records of his two night stint finishes and Hot Natured are coming to town. The brainchild of Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, the label has been about injecting the bass laden house music of modern times with a sassy disco vibe. But this is nothing like the French house sound that equally plundered the same source material.

Instead it’s more focused on subtle grooves and gently pulsating rhythms, chugging basslines that add a gentle funk to a summer vibe and swaggering dynamism. The pair were the toast of the WMC and grace the finest clubs across Europe; Fabric, PanoramaBar, Robert Johnson and DC10 among them. And of course, Sankeys. They are joined by Richie Ahmed.
