“Threadbare textures, racked vocals and self-lacerating content…(will leave you) enraptured by his candour and courage” – Sunday Times Culture
“The bravest album of the year” – Clash
“4 stars – a class apart” – The Stool Pigeon
“9/10 – a fragile, f**ked up little wonder – NME
It is difficult to think, in recent years, of an album more affecting or heart rending than “Learning”, the debut LP by Perfume Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas. Recorded in self-imposed isolation one year in his mother’s house after a particularly tumultuous coming-of-age in New York, it distilled the pain, sorrow, loss and longing of a life spent teetering dangerously on the brink into 10 songs which were alternately beautiful, harrowing, unsettling and, as on the spectral closer “Never Did”, ultimately uplifting.
Hadreas first played in the UK last summer; since then however, he has reaped glowing accolades on both sides of the pond from the respected likes of Pitchfork, the Guardian, NME, Sunday Times Culture (which named “Learning” one of the albums of the year) and Clash (who also named him one of the “Best Newcomers of the Year”), as well as winning over fans with his intense, poignant live shows. With new material currently in the works, Perfume Genius returns to the UK and Europe for his biggest shows yet, including a London date at Bush Hall, and wrapping up in a date at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona.
“Learning” is out now on Organs (Turnstile)
