The Musgraves – Lost in Familiarity

| On 14, Mar 2011

The Musgraves new EP Lost in Familiarity presents the bands’ own brand of accessible folk-pop, a sound that is within reach of anyone who is able to enter their whimsical world. Lost in Familiarity is a refreshingly self-aware release that seems to know its own capabilities, acknowledging its limits rather than trying to excel them, creating an ultimately enjoyable sound.

The best track on the EP is without a doubt So Sofia, a relentlessly upbeat track that will not fail to put a smile onto your face and life into your feet. The catchy and unchallenging vocals ensure that anyone can sing along to this track and what’s more the infectious nature of the song is an ailment that listeners will welcome; the band seem to genuinely be having fun and whatever they are on- I want some of that! Other tracks on the EP include the more mellow Discover Me, in my opinion this band are at their best when they are playing upbeat pop and by attempting to play a more poignant, sedate number, their limitations become more apparent. The other tracks Fortune Teller and Back to Me retain the melodic, upbeat sound of So Sofia but somehow lack its magic.

Ultimately The Musgraves show promise as a band that have the capabilities to create infectious and melodic pop tunes, however, despite palpable moments when they are spot on, the EP often falls short of this.
