FIRST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT FOR SUMMER SUNDAE WEEKENDER 2011:
EARLY BIRD TICKETS ARE ON SALE UNTIL 4th APRIL
Summer Sundae Weekender 2011 is delighted to announce the first additions to this year’s line-up after the resounding success of last year’s sold out weekend, making the festival once again an essential date in the summer music calendar.
The first headliner to be revealed is South London quintet The Maccabees. These rakish romantics will undoubtedly prove a highlight of the weekend when they take to the main stage. Both albums: ‘Colour It In’ and ‘Wall of Arms’ were released to rapturous critical acclaim and with a new album in the pipeline, there is a fine catalogue of indie gems to excite the Summer Sundae festival goers. It is with great excitement that we also welcome Graham Coxon, arguably one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, to the Summer Sundae line-up.
Brit-nominated Newton Faulkner will also be taking to the main stage, whose debut album “Hand Built by Robots’ reached the Number One spot and sold over a million copies. The Bees colourful psychedelic rock is sure to bring the sunshine to Leicester and set the lush grounds of De Montfort Hall abuzz, as will Little Comets whose knack for melody and songwriting has had them hailed heroes of the North.
Summer Sundae Weekender has always had a great reputation for showcasing folk music, cemented last year with a headline slot for Mumford & Sons. This year is no exception and we are proud to have Bellowhead, one of the country’s most revered live outfits. Best-selling Indian artist Raghu Dixit will also be joining us along with the quintessentially English Skinny Lister whose unique brand of folk has already built them a loyal and ever-growing fanbase.
It is also with great excitement that we announce two musical veterans to the Summer Sundae bill this year. When rock’n’roll was shaken from pre-punk complacency by the emergence of Dr. Feelgood, their guitarist Wilko Johnson attracted special attention, not only for his startling stage performances but also for his machine gun frenzy guitar style. John Cooper Clarke will also be returning to the festival after a rapturous performance in 2007.
Year on year the festival has delivered a broad spectrum of emerging and established artists and this year is no different. The Cuban Brothers will bring their unique flavour to this year’s lineup. Born of the loins of seventies Havanna and inspired by Cuban historical fact and mythology, their fresh approach to live entertainment whips up a frenzy at every gig. Mixing acapella and rap, UK rhymester and his 6 piece live band Dizraeli and the Small Gods are another welcome edition and again emphasise the eclectic nature of the Summer Sundae 2011 line-up.
This brings us along to the award winning C.W Stoneking, a Southern Bluesman who tells epic musical tales inspired by his time shipwrecked off Africa’s West Coast. Nottingham born soul musician Liam Bailey will also be joining the mix, a bright new talent and recent signing to Amy Winehouse’s Lioness Records. Another home grown emerging talent is 21-year-old singer / songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich who releases his haunting and heartbreaking debut long playerthis month. Various Cruelties are a secretive band, with little internet presence aside from a smattering of tracks available to listen to on Band Camp. If ‘Chemicals,’ and ‘If it wasn’t for you,’ are anything to go by though, they should offer a real treat.
There are also two artists who were booked after performances at Eurosonic festival in Groningen this January as part of the European Talent Exchange Program (www.etep.nl). The Black Atlantic will be bringing their beautiful melancholic pop to the Midlands’ premier music festival and Cajun band Mama Rosin, who recently appeared on Jools Holland’s ‘Later’, are sure to impress with their laid back, jazz influenced sound.
As a preamp to the festival, Summer Sundae Weekender will be curating stages at Bergenfest in Norway and Camden Crawl over the weekend of the 29th – 1stMay. The festival is particularly proud of its 11 year history and since its inception in 2001 it has expanded to a three day, six stage festival, with over a hundred acts. With a holistic approach to planning it has consciously retained the same boutique atmosphere and relaxed appeal that initially set it apart from other festivals. With yet more attention shown to all aspects of the festival, from improved camping facilities and further investment in The Garden, Kidzone and The Village areas, there will be more than just musical treats to tantalise at Summer Sundae 2011.
