Nik Kershaw says: “It is my privilege to be a part of such a brilliant night celebrating the best of the British pop. The fact it is for learning disability charity Mencap makes it even more special”
Hazel McIlwraith, Mencap’s assistant director of fundraising said: “Our Friends Acoustic is set to be a fantastic night out, so come along with your friends, relive the best of the 80s with a selection of great acts from the era and help Mencap support people with a learning disability, their parents and carers.”
Topping the bill and hosting the show will be the one and only, 80s heart throb, Nik Kershaw. A man whose good looks and top tunes made many weak at the knees, Nik is sure to rock The Grand in Clapham like never before. In 1987, the world met a new vocal talent in the form of the powerful and soulful Rick Astley. His debut single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ hit the top of the charts within two weeks of its release and immortalised him as a true 80s hero. Joining them is punk princess and high priestess of TV, Toyah Willcox; whose biggest hit ‘It’s A Mystery’ and Platinum-selliing album ‘Anthem’ celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2011 – another perfect addition to the evening’s 80s soundtrack.
Fronted by the flame haired beauty Carol Decker, T’Pau will be providing the heart and soul of the evening. ‘China In Your Hand’ was a defining musical moment in the 80s and number one for five weeks running, making their appearance at Our Friends Acoustic one not to be missed! The Grammy nominated Cutting Crew, who spawned the classic hits ‘(I Just) Died in Your Arms’ and ‘I’ve Been in Love Before’ are also set for an appearance alongside the raft of stars.
Hazel O’Connor’s distinctive and captivating voice made her a powerful presence in the music scene. Her many hits include ‘Eighth Day’ and ‘Will You’ and her appearance in the film Breaking Glass proved this was one star you could expect big things from. Another starlet on vocals is Katrina, the remarkable voice of Katrina and the Waves, best known for their smash hit single ‘Walking on Sunshine’, they had songs covered by the likes of The Bangles and Celine Dion. Katrina now returns to the stage for an exclusive performance at Our Friends Acoustic. Last but not least is Jimmy Sommerville who wowed the world with the bell clear melodies of ‘You Are My World’ and the disco inspired ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’. His songs defined the decade as the unmistakeable voice of ‘Bronski Beat and The Communards’ that hits notes like no one else.
Tickets for this ultimate 80s bash go on sale from Wednesday 2 March through www.ticketmaster.co.uk priced from £25 which includes exclusive access to the after show party. All proceeds go to learning disability charity Mencap.
