Calling all women music creators: PRS for Music Foundation offers an exciting funding opportunity for new music written by women.

| On 26, Feb 2011

Calling all women music creators: PRS for Music Foundation offers

an exciting funding opportunity for new music written by women.

Launch date of ‘Women Make Music’ to coincide with International

Women’s Day celebrations on 8th March 2011.

In the past decade, of the albums short-listed for the Mercury Music Prize, albums by

men have outnumbered albums by women more than 2:1; just 4.1% of works performed

at the 2010 BBC Proms were composed by women; and writer membership of PRS for

Music, the Performing Rights Society of composers, songwriters and music publishers is

14% female. To highlight this gender gap in the music industry, PRS for Music

Foundation is launching a new funding opportunity to coincide with International

Women’s Day on March 8th.

‘Women Make Music’ is a call for new works by women music creators in any music

genre – from urban, pop and electronica to classical, jazz and experimental music. This

is an exciting opportunity for music organisations, festivals, promoters, venues and

ensembles to collaborate with female music creators and apply for funding for the first

performance of their new work. Funding of up to £5000 is available to assist with the

commissioning process, the costs of the first performance and the fee for the music

creator. Encouraging new and adventurous collaborations is a priority and women

creator/performers who want to write new music that they will perform live are also

invited to apply.

Chair of PRS for Music Foundation, Sally Taylor said:
We are launching this call because we want to raise awareness about the funding

we offer to music creators and encourage more women to come forward for this

support. By promoting role models for future generations, we hope that we will

be encouraging more women to think about making a living as a music creator.

Imogen Heap, who is performing at the Women of the World Festival on March

11th endorses this call and encourages women to apply:

I know they’re out there, I’ve met and heard of a few, but would love to know

more and hear more as we’re only hearing one side of the story!

Applications for ‘Women Make Music’ will be accepted from 8th March 2011 –

International Women’s Day. There are 2 deadlines for applications on

13th May and 8th August 2011.
