Have you ever thought that “I don’t like this band” just watching it taking the instruments before the gig even starts? Well, I’ve never been so wrong recently and from now on I’ll just wait till the end of a performance before even making a little thought. Let me be honest with you, my first impression of this band was “Ok, here’s another Indie band for another Indie night” but again I was wrong. It took only two songs to understand that this time I was experiencing something different. Dutch Uncles are different. These five guys from Manchester are offering a unique and alternative soundtrack for your daily routine. In some parts I really thought I was listening to Foals and Two Door Cinema Club in full flow of a great song while having a cup of tea.
What’s on the menu tonight: atypical rhythmic structures, guitars, drums, start-and-stop rhythms and a peculiar voice. Yes, a really peculiar voice, because Duncan Wallis’ voice is something you may either love or hate. I personally loved it although the Garage (upstairs) is not the best place to appreciate such these qualities. Anyway, their setlist ranged over both their self-titled debut album as well as track from their new studio work. Songs like Fragrant, Twelfth and The Ink have integrated the best and the worse of the so-called Math-Rock, a complex genre from the late 80s that has its revival in these tracks. The asymmetrical signature of Dutch Uncles finds its peak in songs like Dressage, OCDUC and their forthcoming single Face In.
Dutch Uncles are currently on tour. For info and dates, check out their official website: www.dutchuncles.co.uk or www.myspace.com/dutchuncles.
