Sonido party with Simon Baker and Burnski – Fri 11th February, Leicester

| On 04, Feb 2011

So – the dust has settled over the festive celebrations and NYE and NYD are, for another year, put behind us. At Leicester’s SONiDO, one of 2010’s star small club nights, the team have been chomping at the proverbial bit to get back into action, with their first session dropping in on Friday 11th February with Simon Baker and Burnski. In the last twelve months, they busied themselves with Ibiza boat parties, a superlatively good 2nd birthday with Jamie Jones and bringing some of the most effervescent names underground techno names to the Midlands, including Dyed Soundorom, Chris Lattner, Yousef, Jozif and Alex Cellar. 2011 will witness as considerable upping of the ante.
Simon Baker stands apart from his peers, a UK artist that knows his own style and generates his own musical footprint. Pioneering labels clamber for his tracks, each creating a fresh storm and the word of his dextrous musical style has spread to the far reaches of the globe as he tours the continents relentlessly. Not one but two of Baker’s productions made it into iTunes Best Of Year charts in 2009, and early 2011 opens up to the release of his debut artist album, Traces, expected for a release this year on his home label 2020Vision.
The album effortlessly balances Simon’s trademark club tracks with a more musical, refined sound that has been developing steadily over his past releases.  Grey Area has been one of the stand out tracks of his dj sets for months, and is just one of the album tracks which is equally suited for basement parties and Space terrace as it is as part of the album experience.  The two collaborations featuring vocals from new finding Debukas, No Pressure and Let Me In punctuate the album perfectly and provide a classic soulful edge, as does Someone Like with its superb, uplifting pianos, these tracks prove Simon is now capable of working with musicians to fulfill the widescreen visions of his music.
Simon’s remixes are equally defined and sought after, such as his rework of Simian Mobile Disco ‘Sleep Deprivation’ and Radio Slave ‘Bell Clap Dance’ on Rekids, as well as Timo Maas ‘Bite the Dust’ and with Jamie Jones for Crazy P ‘Stop Space Return’. This is a prime chance to catch Simon in the intimate confines of Superfly – don’t miss this show!
As a DJ, Burnski is a steadfast vinyl advocate always armed with a bag of fresh music. His sets are intuitive and trained by the versatility of his residency at Leeds’ legendary Back to Basics, whose hedonistic and party-centric crowd are used to receiving the world’s best underground DJ’s on a weekly basis. Switching from warm deep house to groovy peak time techno, he is capable of showcasing a wide variation of sounds across the spectrum from jazz, disco, electro, dub, house, minimal and techno – a style now familiar to some of some of the most established clubs in Europe such as Fabric, Watergate in Berlin, The Loft, Barcelona as well a particularly memorable rooftop DJ set in the skies above Beirut. His SONiDO debut is one to savour.
Support comes from SONiDO’s esteemed resident quartet of Dani Sölberg, Speneola Martinez, Phil Walker and Jon Brooks.
And don’t forget March’s mouth-watering session with Soul Clap and the return of Death on the Balcony!
