Matthew Chapman – Trainsong: Guitar Compositions 1967 – 2010

| On 01, Feb 2011

Right, I’m not going to lie to you, dear reader. When I read the description for this, I was worried. I was about to listen to an entire album, nay, an entire double album, entirely consisting of folk and blues instrumentals by a seventy year old former label-mate of Deep Purple and Pink Floyd. This was hardly going to be played at a house party, and to be honest, thank Christ for that. Because yes I did get an entire double album of folk and blues instrumentals and do you know what? It was great. Each piece played with a depth, complexity and subtlety that is entirely his own, containing more emotion than most bands can muster in a whole album, let alone a guitar part. Is this ever going to get more than passing recognition from a bunch of sad, sad anoraks such as myself? No. Is that a bad thing? Christ alive no. I take pride in being able to say that the likes of “Little Molly’s Dream” and “Sweet Little Friend From Georgia” will be something of a secret between me and a select few other people, as horribly scene as it sounds. If you’re reading this and think you’ve got a wide enough taste to give this a try, then I urge you to do so. A hidden classic from an astonishingly talented musician.
