Jones Street Station – The Understanding

| On 01, Feb 2011

It’s difficult to write carefree, lo-fi folk pop without sounding like a bunch of stoned sixth-formers with too much time on their hands, but Jones Street Station seem to have it down pretty damn perfectly. The song starts out low key and then building to a huge-sounding, brass band assisted chorus, with new instruments getting added seemingly every 10 seconds or so, all the while assisted by the bands Beach Boy’s esque grasp of how genuinely affecting harmonies can be when deployed properly. It’s heartening to see that the current boom of folk music played by people who most likely weren’t even born when the first great wave of singer-songwriters struck in the seventies has found its way across the pond to say the very least, and Jones Street Station could be one of its main proponents, ones to watch for sure.
