Abigail Washburn – City Of Refuge

Abigail Washburn’s third album City of Refuge provides the pure and authentic vibe that we have come to expect from the American singer-songwriter whilst proving that she has polished her technique and developed her sound. The range of influence upon this release is palpable as it emits an eclectic vibe ultimately marked by its charming blend of Chinese folk that permeates throughout.
Washburn has a fresh, beautiful voice that needs little in the way of ‘production’; the music remains fittingly raw and is carried by the haunting resonance of Washburn’s vocals. Standout tracks on the album include Bring Me My Queen, which is an early triumph as a light musical arrangement successfully undulates beneath the pure vocals. Dreams of Nectar also has a beautiful simplicity; the layers of instrumentation build throughout giving substance and texture to the lyrics whilst retaining the purity and authenticity of Washburn’s vocals.
On first listen of this release I let the music wash over me, however, after taking the time to listen to it properly I have realised that it is a record that needs close attention in order to be fully appreciated. Washburn is an effective writer and somehow manages to produce a listening experience that is at once relaxing and stimulating. The music is both simple and layered and the more intently you listen to it the greater experience you will have as you journey towards Washburn’s City of Refuge.
